Block Steam client updates

Eingetragen: 28.03.2023

Steam
One of the most obvious issues on Steam are the client's forced updates. You will learn how to prevent unwanted updates in a few steps.

In many cases, unexpected updates are carried out, which, to the annoyance of the users, output a wide variety of errors. This means that certain features only work to a limited extent or no longer at all and in the worst case the client is unusable or the own game library is no longer accessible.

Another danger is that Valve will stop supporting older operating systems like Windows 7 with client updates, leaving many users unable to use the platform.

To address these issues, it is possible to block client updates of the Steam software using the steam.cfg file and tell the client not to perform any updates.

To do this, follow the steps below

  1. Navigate to the folder where the Steam client is installed.
  2. Search for the file "steam.cfg." If you cannot find this file, you can create it manually.
  3. Open the "steam.cfg" file with any text editor.
  4. Add the following line at the end of the file: "BootStrapperInhibitAll = enable"
  5. Then add another line "BootStrapperForceSelfUpdate = disable"
  6. Save the file and close the text editor.

The lines have to be entered without quotation marks

BootStrapperInhibitAll = enable - All automatic updates for the Steam client are blocked.
BootStrapperForceSelfUpdate = disable - Prevents the Steam client from updating itself.

Both options can be useful if users want to keep certain versions of the Steam client for compatibility or other reasons and make sure that your Steam client is not updated.

If you still want to update your client, delete the Steam.cfg file or rename it at short notice. Alternatively, you can also deactivate the entries located in the steam.cfg file with a hash before each line.

Download & Spywarecleaner

You can download an already preconfigured Steam.cfg file. Simply extract and copy the file to your Steam installation directory.

Another option is the Spyware Cleaner from the separate download area. The Spyware Cleaner consists of a small batch file that removes unwanted files from the Steam and the game directories, as well as independently writes a steam.cfg to the main directory.
