The initiative criticizes the current practices of game publishers, arguing that they undermine the concept of ownership and leave consumers with a worthless product. The need for such regulation is becoming increasingly urgent due to the ongoing digitalization and the resulting changes in how products are consumed and owned.
While physical products can generally be used without restriction after purchase, this is often not the case with digital products. The initiative sees this as a significant gap in consumer protection that urgently needs to be addressed.
The initiative was partly triggered by the shutdown of the "The Crew" servers by Ubisoft Entertainment S.A. in 2024. This shutdown led to millions of players losing access to a game they had purchased, reigniting the debate over digital property rights.
The initiative aims to collect one million signatures.
Support this initiative proposed by the citizens of the European Union.
If successful, the European Commission will be required to seriously consider the issue and draft appropriate legislative proposals to ensure the protection of digital games and further strengthen consumer rights in the EU.
The collection period ends on July 31, 2025.
